This is the first book to place India in the global early modernity, it allows students to see how India compares and engaged with other early modern Empires and polities to better understand early modern history and India’s place within it.Organised thematically, with each chapter in dialogue with one or more historiographies or specialist literatures, the chapters can be read individually or linearly allowing lecturers to assign the whole or parts of the book to best suit the needs of their course.The chapters engage with topics such as belief, mobility, people and population, capitalism, urbanism, power, knowledge, kingship, and vernacular culture and literature, providing students with an exciting array of entry points into the history of India to broaden their understanding of the country whether they have taken courses on Indian history before or not.
