Excel Advanced Skills: Year 1 Advanced Mathematics

Year 1 Advanced Mathematics is part of the Excel Advanced Skills series which provides students with challenging extension work in Mathematics. Each book in the series supports the requirements of the Australian Curriculum (Mathematics) and covers the strands of Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability. There are 30 units of work. Even-numbered units have two parts: Units A and B. Units that are odd-numbered have four parts: Units A, B, C and D.

Units A and B: Focus on practice Each unit contains 12 questions. The question numbers cover the same topics in each unit (e.g. Unit A question 12 is always a subtraction question; Unit B question 3 is always a money question). The questions become progressively more difficult as students work through the book. This scope and sequence provides for regular practice that will extend the mathematics skills taught in school.

Marking grids are included to record results for these units. These easy-to-use diagnostic tools indicate at a glance each student’s strengths and weaknesses in relation to specific topics. The results can be used to gather information about their progress and revision needs.

Unit C: Focus on problem-solving Each unit consists of nine problem-style questions for students to solve. This unit is written in themes with real-life problems to solve. Themes provide a context for the mathematics questions and make mathematical problem-solving more relevant to students.

Unit D: Focus on challenge The format varies from unit to unit because the questions draw from the different strands of the Mathematics curriculum and therefore require more demanding higher-order thinking skills to solve. This part is designed to help students develop deeper understandings about mathematical concepts. This unit is also written in themes with real-life problems to provide a challenge for students.
