This PhD thesis focused on some specific objectives which were characterization of treated secondary refinery wastewater, design, construction, operation and monitoring of planted (\u003ci\u003eT. latifolia\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eC. alternifolius \u003c\/i\u003eand \u003ci\u003eC. dactylon\u003c\/i\u003e) and unplanted vertical subsurface flow, horizontal subsurface flow and hybrid CWs for the removal of suspended solids, nutrients, heavy metals, organic matter and organic pollutants. The CWs effectively treated the petroleum contaminated wastewater to effluent compliance limits. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn this study, \u003ci\u003eT\u003c\/i\u003e. \u003ci\u003elatifolia \u003c\/i\u003eplanted CWs had consistently higher removal efficiencies for all the measured parameters than \u003ci\u003eC. alternifolius \u003c\/i\u003eand \u003ci\u003eC. dactylon \u003c\/i\u003eplanted CW systems.
