Lynch

This book offers a bold re-interpretation of the prevailing narrative that US foreign policy after the Cold War was a failure. In chapters that retell and re-argue the key episodes of the post-Cold War years, Lynch argues that the Cold War cast a shadow on the presidents that came after it and that success came more from adapting to that shadow than in attempts to escape it. When strategic lessons of the Cold War were applied, presidents fared better; when they were forgotten, they fared worse. This book tells the story not of a revolution in American foreign policy but of its essentially continuous character from one era to the next. While there were many setbacks between the fall of Soviet communism and the opening years of the Trump administration, from Rwanda to 9/11 and Iraq to Syria, Lynch demonstrates that the US remained the world's dominant power.

Review(s):
'Readers will be intrigued and provoked by Timothy J. It is particularly useful for teacher-education students who are taking a first course in assessment, and also provides a sound foundation for post-graduate students. The model of pedagogical practice referred to as Quality Teaching is used as a framework for this book. This approach to teaching was developed from the Productive Pedagogy model, which in turn has its roots in the Authentic Pedagogy movement. This book demonstrates how research-based principles of effective teaching (of which the Quality Teaching model is just one example) can be used as a strong foundation for developing learning programs and assessment practices that emphasise quality teaching and learning. This is not a recipe book for writing particular types of questions, but rather emphasises the importance of teachers understanding the principles of learning and assessment. Teachers will discover how to use assessment to guide student learning rather than simply measure what has been learned. It challenges teachers to question traditional assessment practices and to develop new approaches that provide reliable evidence from which valid inferences can be drawn about the quality of students' learning.

Review(s):

EAN: 9780170122474
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0630/9612/7726/products/productresizehandler_33f33e78-a849-4c80-aebf-b502bfb5e2a6.jpg?v=1656911336
practical-objected-oriented-analysis-9780170122986
Practical Objected Oriented Analysis
Author(s): B. Chapters address all the major domains of development as well as core issues in middle childhood such as gender and development, the emergence of reading and writing skills, moral and ethical development, creativity, children with special needs and health and safety concerns in environments for children.

Review(s):

EAN: 9780170123143
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0630/9612/7726/products/productresizehandler_3a08db0d-04d6-4351-a4aa-3334fd17bd68.jpg?v=1656911404
education-and-society-in-aotearoa-new-zealand-9780170124843
Education and Society in Aotearoa New Zealand
Author(s): Paul Adams, Judy Hamer, Roger Openshaw

Education and Society in Aotearoa New Zealand is an introduction to the social and policy contexts of teaching and education. This third edition examines complex questions of cultural diversity, social justice, discrimination, human rights and community relations that remain critical and contested issues in Australia today and raises concerns about racism in its many forms. Essential concepts and theories in the first three chapters underpin the detailed historical and contemporary examination of race and racism in Australia. As a settler society, the situation of indigenous Australians is fundamental and is given particular emphasis in several chapters. However, this focus is located within analyses of debates and experiences of other communities denied their rights to live and be respected in Australia. This approach encourages recognition of the commonalities and differences in the lives of minorities and common factors in their oppression. Race and Racism in Australia closes with a review of official and community-based strategies to combat discrimination and racism and offers practical suggestions for action. It is a long way from New Zealand. During World War 1 it was on the Western Front where German and Allied soldiers fought to break through each other's trench lines. In 1917 New Zealand soldiers fought in two of several battles to try to advance the Allied line so the Allies could capture the high ground of Passchendaele from the Germans. Passchendaele was New Zealand's greatest human catastrophe. It affected more Kiwi families than any other single event in history. Passchendaele was important to New Zealand identity, culture and organisation. It helped Kiwis develop a sense of themselves as a nation. Although New Zealand soldiers were asked to do the impossible, none fought more bravely than them. Passchendaele was an important place and environment. Its mud and carnage became a symbol for the horror of war. The area around it was one of the most shelled places on the planet. It is a long way from New Zealand. In 1915, during World War 1, thousands of Allied soldiers invaded Gallipoli. As part of the invading Anzacs, New Zealand soldiers landed in April and were evacuated in December. Their diaries described Gallipoli as hell on Earth, but they also mentioned some funny events, friends they made, and the bravery of men they fought alongside. Gallipoli was important to New Zealand's identity, culture and organisation. It helped Kiwis develop a sense of themselves as a nation. Today that nation holds fast to Anzac Day, the day of invasion. Gallipoli was an important place and environment. Turks there fought to defend their homeland. This book aims to encourage students to think about disease as a global as well as a New Zealand or personal issue. The epidemics that have raged through the population over the centuries do have a voice in the modern world. Plague has never died out. When it erupted in India in 1994, comparisons with 1347 were immediately made. News reports quoted medieval chroniclers. The Middle Ages were speaking again, this time to the 20th century. The content and the exercises for students provide a wide variety of material which cover current issue perspectives in particular and are consistent with the three processes identified in the new curriculum, namely: Inquiry - Values exploration - Social decision making.

Review(s):

EAN: 9780170216456
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0630/9612/7726/products/productresizehandler_ca188f3d-d6d6-4681-9796-f5c5fad25a28.jpg?v=1656916047
maths-in-the-real-world-the-olympics-9780170217095
Maths in the Real World: The Olympics
Author(s): F. The book begins with a timeline of the 20th century and a 'status report' as at the year 1900, in order to provide an overarching context for what follows. Subsequent chapters cover the major developments in the 20th century, in which New Zealanders were involved or which, due to their global significance, had an impact on New Zealand, even if indirectly. Where New Zealanders were involved in global events, their observations and experiences are included. Big World, Small Country provides rich grounds for discussion, along with activities that explore and develop content understanding, key ideas, predictive reading, values, perspectives and historical empathy. Anecdotes, such as the fact that New Zealand boxer Clarrie Gordon was perhaps the only person to have punched Hitler and survived, help bring history alive. Students are also challenged to consider the reliability and usefulness of sources, including the textbook itself. Graeme Ball, the author of the popular textbook Making Kiwis, has written Big World, Small Country to embrace the flexibility inherent in the New Zealand Curriculum. Teachers may wish to focus on particular topics, and/or allow students to explore and pursue their own interests.

Review(s):

EAN: 9780170217125
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0630/9612/7726/products/Big-World-Small-Country-The-20th-Century-New-Zealand-s-Place-In-It-Book-Land-AU-974.jpg?v=1679364020
